You’ve Planned Your Will… But Have You Planned Your Digital Legacy?

Most people have a will - but what about everything online?

Turns out, 93% of Wills do NOT include Digital Assets.

From bank accounts and passwords to photos, subscriptions, and important documents, your digital world can be impossible for loved ones to navigate without a plan. If you’re over 50, now is the time to make sure nothing important is lost, locked away, or forgotten. A simple digital plan can make all the difference.

Without clear instructions, these can become difficult or even impossible for family to access. Creating a digital plan alongside your will helps protect what matters most and gives your loved ones clarity when they need it most.

Digital Deadlock

Locating and accessing usernames and passwords of a deceased person in Victoria is complex. Without planning, digital assets can be locked or lost forever. Privacy laws and Terms of Service often prevent simple access, and 2FA can block even those with passwords.

Steps for Executors in Victoria include locating info in inventories or password managers, and contacting providers directly with probate proof. Proactively manage your digital estate by creating a digital inventory, using secure storage (not the will itself), and utilizing platform legacy tools like Facebooks Legacy Contact.

Life after Death

Managing your digital footprint after you are gone is an essential part of modern estate planning. We help you create a clear roadmap for your digital assets, ensuring your memories and important accounts are handled exactly according to your wishes.

This is a critical, often overlooked aspect of modern estate planning. When your banking, cryptocurrency, medical records, and 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) are all locked behind a phone's biometric or PIN, your digital life effectively dies with you unless you have prepared. Without a plan, loved ones may be permanently locked out of assets and important information.

Here is a guide to securing this information for after you pass away, based on current digital estate practices:

1. The 2FA and Access Problem

Two-factor authentication is the biggest hurdle for survivors. If your email or bank account requires a code from a phone app (e.g., Google Authenticator) and the phone is locked, your executor cannot access the account.

  • Create a Digital Inventory: List all apps, 2FA methods (SMS or app), and account recovery procedures.

  • Store Backup Codes: When setting up 2FA, websites provide backup codes. Print these or store them securely (e.g., a physical safe) and tell your executor where they are.

  • Use Password Managers: Use reputable managers (e.g., LastPass, 1Password) that have "emergency access" features, allowing trusted individuals access in the event of death.

2. Banking and Financial Apps

  • Provide Device Access: Your executor needs your device PIN or password.

  • Note App-Based Accounts: Ensure your executor knows which apps you use for banking and investment, as these may not have associated paper statements.

3. Cryptocurrency

  • Seed Phrases are Crucial: If you lose your seed phrase, your crypto is unrecoverable. Never store them in your will (which is public), but rather in a secure, private location known only to your executor.

  • Cold Storage Access: If you use hardware wallets (Ledger/Trezor), ensure the PIN is known to the executor.

4. Medical and Personal Records

  • Download and Store: Frequently download important health documents, wills, and personal files from cloud storage (iCloud/Google Drive) to a physical, encrypted hard drive, rather than relying solely on cloud access.

5. Technical Preparation (Setting Up "Afterlife")

  • Apple Legacy Contact: Set up a Legacy Contact in your Apple settings (iOS 15.2+), which allows designated people access to your data without your passcode.

  • Google Inactive Account Manager: Use this tool to tell Google what to do with your data (share with a contact or delete) if your account is inactive.

  • Digital Executor: Appoint a trusted person with technical knowledge in your will to manage your digital estate.
